Public Health and Health Policy

According to studies conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Agency for Healthcare Research, and Quality and the National Institute of Medicine, Hispanics suffer disproportionately from a number of illnesses such as: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast and cervical cancers. This situation is potentially exacerbated by the fact that Hispanics are less likely to have access to health insurance, adequate preventative care or public health education information. This recent focus on healthcare disparities that exists between Latinos and other groups underscores the importance of cultural and linguistically appropriate healthcare delivery. It has also brought to the forefront the role of the minority health professional and the need to bring more minorities into the healthcare workforce.

Hispanics are disproportionately affected by workplace injuries, homicides and domestic violence. Further research is needed to better understand the unique roles that language ability, race and ethnicity, country of origin and generation play in public health, health outcomes and healthcare provision. Over the last decade, TRPI has examined health issues facing the Latino community; the Institute will continue its research into the causes of health disparities among U.S Hispanics.

The Center for Latino Health Policy

The Center for Latino Health Policy was founded in the Fall of 2003. Researchers will examine pressing health issues as they relate to the Latino community. In better understanding the Latino experience with health and health care, the Center looks to better inform policymakers and key stakeholders on such topics as: healthcare disparities, the role of language and culture in health, health care access, as well as the role of minorities in the health professions. Through its actionable policy recommendations, the Center seeks to improve the health outcomes and the quality of life of the Latino community.

TRPI gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Pfizer whose financial support helps fund the Center for Latino Health Policy.
