TRPI's information technology research encompasses an examination of the impact of telecommunications tools on the economic, social, political, and educational life of Hispanic communities throughout the United States. Initiatives in this research area investigate the effects of the gap separating information and communication "haves" and "have-nots".

Computers and the Internet are tools that can help build strong and prosperous communities. Since 1986, TRPI has examined the role of and disparity in access to information technologies in minority communities. The Institute has undertaken extensive research and convened community forums to understand what characteristics are most effective in developing innovative information technology programs in communities with limited resources. Current research projects are focusing on: home access; the exemplary uses of computer and Internet technologies in diverse learning environments, including K-12 schools, libraries, and community centers; the use, effects and diffusion of information technologies for profit and nonprofit sectors; as well as Latino Internet content and usage.

TRPI’s research and data provide the bases for policy strategies that can overcome disparities in access to these critical advanced telecommunications tools. TRPI will continue to provide decision-makers with key information about what is happening in historically underserved neighborhoods so they can be fully informed and responsive to local and national technology needs.
