What We Do

TRPI is one of the nation's premier policy institutes, examining timely issues such as education, political participation of ethnic minorities, information technology, access to healthcare, economic well-being, media, and immigration. Over a period of 20 years, TPRI has released more than 200 research reports and policy briefs, and its work is ongoing.

TRPI's findings continually demonstrate that education is a long-term solution to many of the challenges facing the Latino community. In 2002, TRPI established the Center for Latino Educational Excellence (CLEE) to respond to the continuing need for policy solutions aimed at improving Latino educational opportunities and proficiencies.

In 2003, in order to better understand the Latino experience with health and health care, TRPI founded the Center for Latino Health Policy to better inform policymakers and stakeholders about issues that can improve health outcomes and quality of life in the Latino community.

In 2004, TRPI instituted an annual conference series highlighting topics such as the 2004 Latino vote, immigration policies in an era of homeland security, and strategies to improve Latino college enrollment and matriculation.

In 2005, TRPI received funding for a partnership with the California State University system to implement a three-year pilot "Kids2College" program. This program will bring college awareness to Southern California 6th grade students who have been traditionally underserved and underrepresented in higher education.

In 2006, TRPI implemented a multi-faceted "college knowledge" campaign that bridges college information gaps among Latino parents and students. This campaign included a two-segment news series, aired by MTV networks; a nationally-distributed newspaper insert; and a California-wide information campaign encouraging school officials to hold information nights with the Latino parents and students in their communities.

TRPI's findings and recommendations are heavily utilized and reported on by the media. In 2005, TRPI received over 30 million print citiations, with findings reported by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN, Univision, Telemundo, Associated Press, and hundreds of others.
